It was a shocking shopping experience at a supermarket in Karuma over the weekend… Yours truly checked into the first and only supermarket on the ground floor of Karuma's first storied building only to find packed reptiles on sale. The supermarket is found a stone throw away from the Karuma falls hydro electricity dam project.

Items on sale included snakes priced at 49K, dog meat going as high as 70K a kilo, a pair of chicken feet at 12K, three duck heads at 35K, frogs and other bizzare foods.

DOG MEAT

According to sources, the supermarket serves mainly the Chinese workers working at Karuma falls dam project and some curious Ugandans who try out these foods. From the packaging, the foods are packed, seal items imported from China.

Also, the supermarket sells glass ware and plastics of good quality.

Residents say they have no objections with the supermarket since they don't afford to buy from it. Some also noted that some Chinese workers prefer the black market whereby they secretly sell them dog meat at cheaper cost.

While dog meat is a delicacy among Chinese, in Uganda, it is a taboo and many butcher men caught selling have been arrested.
