The Police are holding city businessman David Katumwa over allegations of defilement.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, confirmed that Katumwa, a renowned sportswear dealer, is being held at Katwe Police Station in Makindye division where he is alleged to have committed the crime.

According to Benon Ayebare, the head of Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Directorate at Katwe Police Station, Katumwa is alleged to have defiled a 16-year-old girl on January 2.

The incident is said to have taken place inside a lodge in Zzana, a Kampala suburb on the Kampala-Entebbe highway.

A relative of the alleged victim, according to the Police, filed a complaint on January 7, five days after the alleged incident had occurred.

The case has been registered at the Police as 45/07/01/2015. In a statement recorded at Katwe Police Station, the alleged victim said she resides in Makindye, a Kampala suburb.

On the fateful day, the alleged victim claimed she was heading to the city centre when she saw Katumwa driving out of his home.

She says she requested him to give her a free ride to Kampala, but upon reaching Kibuye roundabout, Katumwa instead made a U-turn and headed towards Entebbe.

The alleged victim added that Katumwa drove to a lodge in Zzana from where he allegedly defiled her.

Police's Onyango said  that the alleged victim and the suspect were Thursday taken to medical facilities for medical tests to ascertain, among others, their HIV status.

“These days, it is mandatory to carry out HIV tests because of the law we have on HIV/Aids,” he emphasized.

Speaking at Katwe Police Station the same day, Katumwa denied the allegations, saying it was a ploy by the victim and her relatives to extort money from him.

The Police have also taken statements from other people as part of the ongoing investigations into the incident.
