The inspector general of police, Gen. Kale Kayihura is today expected to appear before the defence and internal affairs committee of parliament chaired by Mityana district woman MP and former police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba.

The IGP is expected to be grilled by the no nonsense legislators on continued police brutality against citizens.

Hassan Kaps Fungaroo, Obongi County MP, says Kayihura must defend himself and the force against reports of brutality meted against opposition supporters.

The IGP’s troubles stem from a few weeks ago when his officers appeared on various News channels caning Ugandans indiscriminately after Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s release from Luzira prison.

A first video footage was released on the day Besigye was set free by High court, indicating how police officers on pickup vehicles caned Ugandans who stood by the road side in Kasangati to welcome Besigye back home. Those caned included a pregnant woman.

The second footage was released on day two of Besigye’s release indicating officers in uniforms and crime preventers caning boda boda cyclists in Makindye, a Kampala suburb as they escorted the FDC iron man to the party head offices in Najjanankumbi where he was slated to hold a press briefing.

In this very footage, about 4 officers pounced on a man, caned, and kicked him like his life did not matter.

In the thirds and latest video footage, a police pick-up is seen knocking down a Besigye supporter who was standing on the roadside cheering his leader up. The pickup knocks him first, then rolls him off the paver speeds off, before some other man in civilian attire with a helmet kicks him like some garbage.

All these scenarios are the basis of today’s meeting at parliament. Committee members want Gen. Kayihura to explain who issued orders to beat up citizens of this country as though the police were grazing Muhanga’s cows and goats.
