After five successful events since its inception in 2013, Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (ASFAs) returns for its sixth edition to be held on 7thDecember, 2018 at Kampala Serena Hotel.
Over the past few weeks, the team has carefully selected the nominees for this year’s event in lieu with the thousands of entries received since the nomination process kicked off last month. This coveted list was unveiled last Saturday, 27th October, 2018 at a swanky cocktail event.
The day kicked off with the first ASFA’s Fashionpreneur Summit, under the topic: “Fashion & Africa Rising: The Role of Fashion in the Socio- Economic Growth of the continent.” The summit featured a stellar line-up of panelists which included; NTV’s FlaviaTumusiime who shared an engaging talk on Digital Marketing transformation, Bernard Mukasa, a lawyer, talked about the importance of corporate governance, Imagine Design’s Abdul Abeine discussed the role of Technical Vocational training in the creative and fashion industry, Santa Anzo gave a keynote speech on the state of the global fashion industry and the opportunities therein, and Monalisa Umutoni of Mona faces who shared her inspiring story of trial to triumph.
Renowned South African couturier, David Ttlale closed the evening with a presentation on the basics of Fashion design where he emphasized the need for Africans to own their craft and support their local creatives. The panelists also dived deep into how fashionpreneurs, policy makers and other stakeholders can work together to enable Africa’s fashion scene to thrive thus creating more jobs and economic growth.
The summit also featured a fashion exhibition where some of Uganda’s top creatives displayed their works of art. These were joined by David Tlale, who displayed a fabulous gown with a frill filled bodice and lace sleeves. The team promises to put on an even bigger exhibition during the event in December.
After the summit, attendees were led to the cocktail event held to reveal this year’s list of nominees. The swanky invite-only party hosted the whos and whos of Uganda’s fashion and entertainment industry. This year’s list of nominees is a reflection of the entrepreneurial potential of the fashion industry.
“Every nominee on this list is not just creating, but also tapping deeply into the business potential of what they do,” shared Brian Ahumuza.
The mission of the awards is to promote fashion and the arts, encourage ethnic diversity, and reflect a positive image of Africa. It continues to push for African excellence in a bid to promote the extremely eccentric and colorful fashion scene in Africa which the media so often neglects. This has over the years been the DNA onto which the event is built.
Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards will continue its blooming relationship with last year’s main sponsor Ciroc and media partners NTV Uganda andCapital FM for this year’s edition. Other sponsors include; Serena Hotel Kampala, South African Airlines, Uber, Shweppes, Incredible Media,Kaisha Dog trainers and Imagine designs.
“We would like to also thank everyone who participated in the nomination process and has supported and worked with the ASFAs thus far. We therefore promise another mind-blowing experience at Africa’s premier fashion event in December,” Ahumuza concluded.
