The opposition in Uganda is mourning the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya, a comrade who endured immense struggles to rise from the trenches and claim the position of Member of Parliament for the Kawempe North constituency.
Ssegirinya breathed his last this morning at Lubaga Hospital after a long battle with cancer-related illness.
The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Bobi Wine, has led mourners in paying tribute to the fallen comrade, a man known for leveraging social media, particularly Facebook, to publicize his political career.
"Very sad news this morning. Our brother, our friend, our fellow leader Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya has passed on. Such a dark morning.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un!" Bobi Wine's statement on Facebook read.
Joel Senyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, expressed deep sorrow over Ssegirinya's death, describing him as a true leader who went beyond ordinary leadership attributes.
"It's unfortunate that we have lost him at a very young age. We shall remember him as a true leader who gave everything for the struggle. He has died fighting for his cause," Senyonyi said in an interview with a local television station.
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago also expressed his sadness, calling Ssegirinya’s death a significant loss at a time when his contributions to the fight for freedom were greatly needed.
"Unfortunately, he has lost his life after a long struggle, and he will be missed. I am extremely devastated by the news of his passing. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un," Lukwago said.
Muhammad Ssegirinya passed away at the age of 37.
