Female rapper Keko has criticized Ugandan DJs for neglecting Ugandan music and prioritizing foreign works.

Keko explained that DJs in Uganda are playing more Amapiano and Nigerian music compared to Ugandan music, which she believes is detrimental to the industry.

She pointed out that while many DJs claim to love Ugandan music, their actions suggest otherwise.

According to Keko, the issue often comes down to money, as DJs frequently demand payment in exchange for playing Ugandan music.

"In Uganda, people often say they love their country, but their actions tell a different story. For example, DJs are comfortable playing Amapiano, a beat invented in South Africa, but expect to be paid to play Ugandan music," she said during an interview with a local television station.

The debate over Ugandan DJs not promoting local music has persisted for years, and it appears unlikely to end soon as many new DJs increasingly lean toward international music instead of supporting homegrown talent.

This highlights the ongoing struggle for music industry leaders to develop and promote Uganda's music scene.
