Two roads leading to Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court have been sealed off ahead of Opposition leader Kiiza Besigye’s appearance in the same court this morning.
Besigye will this morning be arraigned before court to face treason charges slapped against him in Moroto last week.
Police is also heavily deployed around the court premises ahead of today’s sitting. He will appear before Nakawa Chief Magistrate James Eremye.
Dr Besigye, was transferred from Moroto prison to Luzira prison on Monday and had been earlier remanded by the Moroto court until May 25.
But judiciary's Senior Communications Officer Solomon Muyita says that Nakawa Chief Magistrate James Eremye has since issued a production warrant to Luzira prison officials to deliver Dr Besigye today at 9am.
Given this development, Muyita explains that the Moroto court proceedings will be rendered null and void since Dr Besigye will be charged afresh.
This is the second time that Besigye is charged with treason, a capital offence in only punishable by death in Uganda. The first trial in 2005 was dropped.
