Rtd. Maj. Gen. Mugisha Gregory Muntu, President of Uganda’s strongest opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change, FDC has Monday officially stepped down from office of the presidency.
Muntu took leave of absence to contest in the party’s presidential election slated for November 17th 2017. Muntu picked nominations to take part in the campaigns this morning.
In the mean time, Gen. Muntu has delegated his powers of office to Hon. Alice Alaso, the Deputy President Eastern Uganda starting today, Monday July 31st 2017.
“She is hereby fully authorized to act in the said capacity until the party presidential elections are concluded, upon which a new office bearer of the said office will be declared by the party electoral commission” Muntu’s letter reads.
He handed over instruments of office at the party head offices in Najjanankumbi this morning, before the press.
Other candidates who have picked nomination forms to run for the same office include; Kawempe South MP, Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa, Patrick Amuriat, Moses Byamugisha, Moses Bakubi Bakubira, and Malcom Matsiko.
Muntu’s biggest rival also party Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi is yet to pick forms. The exercise closes on August 12th.
