Uganda police recorded more 43 cases of gun violence in 2017 alone, says report.
During the weekly police press conference in Kampala this morning, Emilian Kayima, the police spokesperson explained that the 43 cases were handled by the Flying squad unit.
He added that 48 guns were recovered in the operations, while suspects are in custody. The guns were recovered from the areas of Mutukula, Gulu, central business district of Kampala, Kiryandongo, Hoima, Bududa, Mbale, Njeru, Kaliro, Kisoro, Mayige, Amuria, Kasese, Lira, among others.
Kayima however says there were many weapons recovered, but the report only indicates the cases covered by flying squad. According to Kayima, 23 suspects were arrested during the operations though some run away and remain unknown.
“In the case of Bweyogerere which I remember, three were put out of action, 2 fled on a motor bike. So, in other cases they flee, and we don’t have the right figures. But something is being done” Kayima stated.
