The ministry of health has clarified that the disease which has claimed 4 lives in Kyangwali refugee settlement in Hoima is not Cholera, as earlier reported, but cases of Shigella - a non-epidemic type of diarrhea.
Cases have been confirmed in Kyangwale and Kigolobya camps, Hoima district, and Kyaka 2 in Kyegegwa district. According to the ministry, about 25 cases have been listed in Kyegegwa and about 60 cases in Hoima.
UNHCR however told Howwe.Biz this morning that 4 people died in Kyangwali of the Cholera like epidemic.
According to ministry reports, Patients with Shigella present with Diarrhea (sometimes bloody), Fever, Stomach Pain, Utge to pass stool even when bowels are empty.
“Response teams, led by the Ministry of Health, Red Cross, MSF and other partners are on ground in the two districts, working tirelessly to contain the disease with specific emphasis on WASH activities to avoid further spread.
