Authorities in the district of Kapchorwa have confirmed the death of three people in Kaptokwoi village, Kaptanya Sub County, following deadly mudslides that hit the area last night night.

It is believed that the mudslides started at about 7:30 pm in the night following a heavy down pour that had begun at 1:00pm in the afternoon.

The Sipi Regional Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika says the mudslides buried a house of one resident only identified as Alice who was inside together with her two children aged 4 and 6 years.

The police mouthpiece says authorities were yet to inform the Red Cross and Non-governmental organizations in the area to assess the damage and help those affected.

Susan Chegalat a resident of Kaptokwoi village explains that the night downpour also destroyed homes and crops in some parts of the district.

She adds that district authorities are yet to visit the affected area, calling upon the Uganda Red Cross Society and Ministry of Relief and Disaster preparedness, to come to their rescue.
