The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has suspended the importation, sale and distribution of 7 kinds of peanut butter products from Kenya.
In a statement released this afternoon, UNBS says the suspension came after laboratory tests carried out by their Kenya Bureau of Standards indicated that the products had high levels of aflatoxin contamination. Aflatoxin is a poisonous cancer-causing compound.
The peanut butter products that have been banned are; Nu te ez manufactured by Jetlack Foods Limited, Zesta manufactured by Tru foods limited, Nutty by Nature manufactured by Target Distributors and True nuts by Truenutz kenya.
The others are; Supa meal manufactured by Supacosm Products limited, Sue's naturals by Nature's way health and Dressy by Fressy food company.
According to UNBS, importers, distributors and relatilers are to cease the sale and distribution of the products and ensure that they are not displayed in retail outlets until further notice.
"All UNBS imports inspectors at border points have been notified to cease consignments of the listed brands. UNBS would like to advise consumers to avoid buying the products" the statement reads.
The bureau also says it will continue carrying out market surveillance inspectolions to ensure that the products are removed from display. Members of the public have been cautioned to remain vigilant and report any display of the aforementioned peanut butter products.
