Uganda Police force officers and former presidential candidate Col.Dr. Kiiza Besigye were this morning engaged in running in Kasangati, Wakiso district as the former fought to block the latter from leaving home to lead a planned parallel Anti-Corruption walk to the city centre.
On Tuesday, the former FDC party president announced he would lead an anti-corruption walk from his Katonga offices to constitutional square, moments after President Museveni and group were done with their own walk to Kololo.
However, in the wee hours of this morning Police officers surrounded Besigye’s home early in the morning to block him from leaving, but he by-passed them and was later intercepted at Mpererwe town where a group of youths tried to block his arrest, sparking running battles between police and Besigye.
Police had also surrounded the People’s government offices at Katonga Road where Besigye was heading while members of the public were denied access.
According to Dr Besigye's Secretary Lydia Mugisha, they found difficulty accessing the premises and she was only allowed in after a long bargain with security personnel.
Some of the people who were present including Lawyer Abdallah Kiwanuka waited at Katonga Road said Museveni’s walk is meaningless when corruption continues despite existence of institutions like the Inspectorate of Government and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit. He says there is lack of political will to fight corruption in Uganda.
