Police yesterday told traders who lost their merchandise at Nakivubo Parkyard market that they had no clue of the cause of the fire.

But the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, told traders that they were working hard to ensure that investigations are carried out to a logical conclusion.
“We shall investigate, but the most important thing is the structures which are used in the construction of the market. The structures and merchandise are flammable. When fire breaks out, it spreads very fast,” Gen Kayihura said.

Park Yard market fire started between 3:30am and 4am and razed 95 per cent of the market. The market has caught fire three times in five years, but the police have never produced any report on the cause of the fires.

Gen Kayihura refuted allegations that there are no reports made on the fires, and said they “were just not conclusive”.

Kampala Metropolitan Police commander Andrew Felix Kaweesi said the damage at the Park Yard market was bigger than the most recent ones.

“The damage was big because we had to focus on St Balikuddembe Market first to prevent fire from spreading to the Stadium and other buildings. We were able to stop the fire,” Mr Kaweesi said.
