The latest report from the Traffic Directorate of police reveals that 289 persons died in car crashes in the month of July 2022.
Faridah Nampiima, the Uganda Traffic Police spokesperson says a total of 1,338 accidents were recorded in the month of July alone with over 731 critical injuries.
“Of these (1338 accidents), 234 were fatal, 731 were serious and 337 were minor. There were a total of 1254 victims involved in these accidents, 289 of which died and 965 were injured,” Nampiima said.
In June 2022, a total of 366 people died and 1,146 sustained injuries from road accidents.
Police blamed the accidents on reckless driving, over-speeding, and any other reckless behavior on the road.

Similarly, the latest statistics from traffic police indicate reckless driving and vehicles in critical mechanical conditions as the leading cause of accidents on Ugandan roads.
Nampiima also notes that the traffic police issued 38,771 tickets to drivers and other motorists on the roads with 6,599 of these penalized for reckless driving.
She adds that 8,327 were driving vehicles in unsafe mechanical conditions while 3,724 had invalid driving licenses.
