Tragic news struck the UPDF Air Force as Brigadier General Stephen Kiggundu, the Deputy Commander, died on Easter Sunday evening. His sudden passing, announced by Defence Spokesperson Brig Felix Kulayigye, left the military community in shock.
According to Brig Gen Kulayigye, Brig Gen Kiggundu, who had been well throughout the day, was found lifeless in his bathroom at his official residence in Entebbe. The circumstances surrounding his death, believed to be from an accidental electrocution while showering, remain unclear.
Born on April 3, 1977, in Bugonga, Brig Gen Kiggundu had a distinguished career within the UPDF. Joining the force in July 1999, he underwent rigorous training, including specialized courses in Israel and the United States, becoming a skilled paratrooper and combat trainer. His expertise and leadership were evident as he served as Squad commander of Uganda’s fighter jets.
Brig Gen Kiggundu’s promotion to Deputy Commander of the UPDF Air Force in November 2022 reflected his dedication and competence. He stepped into the role during a challenging time for the air force, marked by resource constraints and tragic accidents. Under his leadership, efforts were made to improve safety and efficiency, resulting in a reduction in the number of crashes.
The news of Brig Gen Kiggundu’s passing reverberated throughout the UPDF fraternity and the wider military community. His contributions to strengthening Uganda’s Air Force capabilities will be sorely missed, particularly during this critical period.
