Several supporters of the National Unity Platform are nursing wounds at Nazigo heath centre where they were rushed after they were shot during a scuffle with police.
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu the NUP presidential candidate says his team was ‘attacked’ by police and the army in Kayunga on their way to Jinja for a rally.
Kyagulanyi adds that his supporters had lined up by the road side to wave at him, only to be showered with teargas and live bullets.
In the scuffle ASP Kato from the counter terrorism police who was assigned by electoral commission to guard Kyagulanyi was hit by what doctors termed as a ‘blunt object likely to be a stray bullet.’
Kyagulanyi’s producer Dan Magic who was in the same car with the candidate was also shot in the face.
Police further faced criticism for firing teargas and live bullets inside Nazigo health centre where the injured were rushed for treatment.
“The police and military have attacked us yet again, shot and injured many of my team members and other Ugandans who gathered to wave to me in Kayunga. My friend and producer Dan Magic has been hit in the face! ASP Kato, a police officer attached to me has also been badly injured. Many comrades are gravely injured. Pray for us. Pray for Uganda. We shall overcome!” Kyagulanyi says.
He was meant to campaign in the areas of Kayunga, Jinja and Kamuli.
