The family of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya faces internal competition as one of his widows, Twayira Akandiida, has announced her intention to contest for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat. This comes after the family had earlier endorsed Alex Luwemba, Ssegirinya’s former personal assistant, for the position.

Twayira Akandiida expressed confidence in her ability to lead, citing her close relationship with her late husband during his tenure in office. “I believe I have the skills and knowledge to serve the people of Kawempe North. I am ready to continue from where my husband left off,” she said during an interview with a local TV station.

However, Akandiida’s bid faces competition from Luwemba, who has the backing of Ssegirinya’s mother, Justin Nakajumba. “We want NUP and the people of Kawempe North to vote for Alex Luwemba. We are confident they will not regret supporting him,” Nakajumba stated.

In addition to Akandiida and Luwemba, the race for the NUP ticket includes Magala Umar, the party’s registrar for Kawempe division, as well as seasoned lawyer Luyimbazi Nalukoola and other aspirants.

The contest for the Kawempe North seat is expected to be highly competitive, with each candidate vying to uphold the late MP’s legacy while addressing the needs of the constituency.
