It will take place at Old Trafford on August 3 and Starsport can reveal former United sensation Ronaldo is all set to be the star of the show.

It is understood Rooney has telephoned his former team-mate personally to ask him to take part in the game and Ronaldo has agreed.

The duo have remained close friends since Ronaldo left United to join Real Madrid in 2009 and his return to Old Trafford will guarantee Rooney a sell-out crowd for the game.

A source said: "Ronaldo is a busy man but there was no way he would miss something like this.

"It promises to be an all-star cast, but Ronaldo will be the biggest of the lot. He might even upstage Wayne himself."

Rooney said: "The match night will obviously be special for me and my family, but I hope that we can also deliver one or two surprises."

United chief executive Ed Woodward said: "From his sensational debut hat-trick to the latest of his 236 goals, Wayne has been a central figure in what has been one of the most successful periods in the club's history."

Rooney is having a tough season so far and has come under fire for his lack of goals.

But his overall tally of 236 since joining United from Everton for £27m in 2004 leaves him behind only Sir Bobby Charlton (249) and Denis Law (237) in the club's list of all-time scorers.

Rooney is just seven appearances away from becoming the 10th player to reach 500 for United and his medal haul at United includes five Premier League titles and a Champions League.
