Born, Daniel Wamono in 1991, Blezz is the 4th born out of the 8 children of the Mugirya family in Mbale. Calamity befell the young Dan when he lost his dear mum at a tender age of 5 in 1995. He had to contend with staying with different step mothers until he could not bear it and he chose to go and live with his grandmother.

“I started staying with my grandmother and she became everything to me; she was now my mother, my father and my life-coach. She taught me how to be a man, encouraged me to work hard, never to give up and to always believe in myself. I learnt how to cook, wash, dig, make crafts and sustain myself from her place.” Recalls Dannie Blezz.

Dan’s love for music started very early in his childhood and one of the catalysts was his musical family. His late Mum, Aunt and Grandmother all used to sing in the Church Choir while his Grandfather would play instruments. His passion for singing and dancing grew started growing the more he interacted with the people around him.

Digging was one of the chores he was always assigned to do but he would sing while in the garden and comically use the hoe as a guitar. Passersby would laugh at Dan’s histrionics and attempts to be a musician in a garden and as a result, he rarely sung in public and channeled his energies to socially acceptable activities like soccer.

Leaving the Village

Prior to 2004, Dannie Blezz’s world exclusively rotated around Mbale. It was not until completing his primary education and joining Yale High School in Jinja that he got some exposure to the world beyond Mbale. Life away from Mbale proved difficult for Dan in that he failed to adjust to the boarding school conditions at Yale High School and he pleaded to be allowed back to Mbale. He continued playing soccer throughout school and he was always a first choice pick for all the school teams.

Becoming a Leader

Being a soccer star, Dan was a source of joy and entertainment to many of his contemporaries at school and they chose him as their Entertainment Prefect. On top of soccer, Dan now had to entertain his peers even in other avenues and inevitably, he had to resurrect his dormant passion for Music.  And indeed he didn’t disappoint on the music front. He became a darling for the ladies who kept on screaming that “Danny Blaze Us” during performances and that is how Dan Wamono ended up becoming Dannie Blezz.  During evenings, he would make time to attend Karaoke sessions, not as a Performer but a Spectator to watch the talent there.

Coming to the City

In 2012, Dannie Blezz connected with a Producer, called Dr Killerman during one of the Karaoke sessions in Mbale. Dr. Killerman had previously produced music stars like Bebe Cool and he promised Dannie Blezz that he would help him with his music if he ever got to Kampala and it is this that triggered his migration to Kampala.  However, on getting to Kampala, connecting with Dr Killerman was not as easy as he had anticipated and he ended up abandoning that connection. He landed in the hands of his elder brother Paul Shan who had started producing music in Kampala.

Getting Signed on to the Mashroom AE Label

In 2015, Dannie Blezz was part of a music band that was invited to perform Makerere University’s School of Psychology Alumni Dinner from where he did a rendition of Pat Shange’s Mysterious Girl. And in the Audience was a one Francis Mutekanga who was awed by Dannie Blezz’s voice and passion as he performed. Being passionate about talent promotion, Francis got more interested in Dannie Blezz and engaged him in a brief discourse after the Dinner.

It was then that Dannie Blezz opened up to Francis Mutekanga and told him all his financial woes and how they had constrained his dreams. Getting his songs recorded was a big challenge, he could not shoot videos, he could not afford transport to go for shows and he didn’t have a strong table of support in the city. And Francis Mutekanga took it upon himself to help Dannie Blezz out.

In August 2016, Dannie Blezz got signed under Mashroom Arts and Entertainment Label through Francis. Under the Mashroom Label, he has managed to release his first album   titled Muntu Wange. On the long journey ahead

“Music is what is in my heart. To me it is a calling. So many upcoming Artistes now look up to me and they want o be where I am. My desire is to see them rising up to the top, I just don’t want to benefit from music commercially, but to leave a legacy that I helped others to attain a better life. I have lived to learn the importance of patience, determination, focus and I see myself capturing the international scenes.
