Thirteen suspected cannibals from Rakai District were on Friday produced before Masaka Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder.
They are accused of killing a 21-year-old woman and her baby in March and eating them.
The suspects are; Asaf Muhimbise, Bosco Sseggiriinya and his son Alex Ssebbaala, Elmelda Nalubega, Joviet Nuwagaba, Mike Kabiito, Ronald Ssebuwufu, Maria Nabukenya, Alex Ssemyaalo, Lameka Kaweesi, Ismael Ssekyanzi and a 15-year-old boy and another who was not readily identified.
However, prosecution was not in court, which forced the magistrate to further remand them till July 1 for mention of the case.
Prosecution alleges that on March 23, 2014 at Kyakirugu Village in Kyarulangira Sub-county, Asaf Muhimbise, 50, and others killed Peace Kyamukama Arinaitwe and her nine-month-old baby and ate their bodies.
Peace Kyamukama and husband, Deus Bandihihi, were travelling from Rwenninzi village in Rakai District, where they had been for a burial, back to their home at Kankamba Village in Kisekka Sub-county, Lwengo District.
They reportedly sought shelter at Mr Muhimbise’s home to spend a night, expecting to resume their journey the following day. Mr Ahimbisiwe, however, allegedly moblised his co-accused and killed Kyamukama and her baby.
Mr Bandihihi escaped with injuries and reported the matter to police which led to the arrest of the suspects.
