The police in Ibanda have launched investigations into circumstances under which Julius Twijukye a suspect, committed suicide in their cells using the shirt he was dressed.

The Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations Department at Ibanda Police Station, Susan Tumugumye says Twijukye was picked up over the weekend for assaulting his father, but they were shocked to find the suspect hanging in the police cells on Monday afternoon, where he was locked up alone.

Tumugumye says they are investigating to establish circumstances surrounding the suspect's death. This is not the first time a suspect is found dead in police cells in Western Uganda.  On August 30th, 2016, Alex Mugisha, a boda boda cyclist committed suicide in custody at Mbarara Central Police station.

Mugisha had been apprehended by his brothers for alleged theft of a motorcycle registration number UEE 061I.  The motorcycle belonged to one of the brothers, identified as Crispus Mugisha.  He was believed to have died as a result of torture.
