Tragedy has struck Morgan Freeman's family. The Oscar winner's step-granddaughter E'Dina Hines was fatally stabbed early Sunday in New York City, the NYPD has confirmed.
Officers found Hines lying in the street outside her home in Washington Heights at about 3 a.m., where she was suffering from multiple stab wounds to her torso, according to the statement. A 30-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene of the crime, outside of Hines' Washington Heights apartment, and taken to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
"The world will never know her artistry in talent, and how much she had to offer," Freeman said via his own statement to CBS News. "Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace."
Hines, the granddaughter of Morgan's first wife was an aspiring actress who was active in the NYC theater community. She had just spent her weekend supporting her fellow thespians at an Off-Broadway performance of King Liz and praising the film, Straight Outta Compton, according to her Facebook.
She was was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, according to the NYPD. The investigation is ongoing and no further details are available.
