Kampala City traders under their umbrella body KACITA, have called off a strike which started Thursday protesting new taxation regulations.
KACITA spokesperson Isa Ssekito has called upon traders to open their shops following a meeting held on Thursday by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), KACITA and the Police.
The Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura and URA chief Doris Akol attended.
Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Thursday vowed to continue with its tough stance over traders involved in tax crimes such as smuggling, under value declaration and miss-description.
On Thursday many shops were locked up in downtown Kampala as traders protested arrests of colleagues that have committed tax crimes.
Hundreds of city shoppers remained stranded as shops selling items like computer appliances, electronics, boutiques, hard ware shops, animal feed shops remained closed for the whole day and some for close to four hours.
Most affected streets include, Luwum Street, Market Street, Kampala road, Nakivubo channel, Container village, Namirembe road, William Street and others.
Vendors took advantage of the strike to make some quick sales in the streets. At around 07:35am street vendors filled most of the streets of the city Centre to taking advantage of the closure of shops and make quick money.
