The family of Robert Karamagi, who was allegedly burnt to death 11 years ago at the home of Ugandan artist Joseph Mayanja, known as Jose Chameleone, has petitioned the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to reopen the case.
This is the third time the family has requested the reopening of the murder case. Karamagi's father has demanded justice for his son and asked for the chance to give fresh evidence to the police. The lawyers representing the family note that the DPP's predecessors promised to investigate the case, but no progress has been made.
In 2015, the then DPP ordered the police to reopen the case file, but it was closed again in 2014 due to a lack of sufficient evidence. The deceased's father was asked to provide fresh evidence for consideration. The family has written to the DPP twice since then, complaining about the mishandling of the case and requesting to join the team investigating the case.
Karamagi died in 2012 under mysterious circumstances at Chameleone's home. Chameleone's wife claimed that Karamagi burnt himself while trying to set her on fire after intruding at their residence.
However, Karamagi's father claims his son told him that his hands were tied with ropes before he was burnt with aviation fuel. Despite the family's requests, no progress has been made in the case.
