For weeks, the Coffee Amendment Bill has dominated debates in the Ugandan parliament and among the public.
The government of Uganda, through parliament, seeks to transfer the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) into the Ministry of Agriculture. However, this move has faced significant resistance from the opposition and the Buganda cultural institution.
The opposition and the Buganda Kingdom believe that moving the UCDA into the Ministry of Agriculture will weaken the coffee economy and ultimately lead to its downfall.
King Saha has joined in condemning the government over this move, claiming that the economy will be doomed if they proceed with the rationalization of UCDA into the Agriculture Ministry.
He says coffee could follow the same fate as moringa, tobacco, cotton, and vanilla.
"Letter to our Leaders...
Dear Leaders,
It looks like Uganda is losing it all... COFFEE has always been our main cash crop, our agricultural backbone. If we allow it to follow the footsteps of moringa, tobacco, cotton, and vanilla, then we are doomed.
Our leaders, the ball is in your hands.
God bless you, God bless Uganda," he wrote.
