The police have recovered more items including cell phones that were stolen during a violent robbery against singer Geoffrey Lutaya and his wife Irene Namatovu on Masaka road in June this year.
Police also arrested five of the ring leaders in the robbery and other robberies across the country. SSP Emilian Kayima, the political commissar and public relations officer Kampala metropolitan police told the press in Kampala today that all the five were arrested from a hotel in Buwama where they were suspected to be organizing for yet another robbery on the Masaka-Kampala High Way last week and they had with them a toy gun, machete (panga) and a pair of army uniforms.
He indentified the long armed men as Captain James Lukwago of NALI Kyankwanzi, Aziz Ayebare, a suspected resident of Lyantonde, Tumureeba Julius, a suspected resident of Mbarara, Jamiru Besigye, a suspected resident of Mbarara and Tabuley Joseph, a suspected resident of Mbikko in Jinja.
The police had earlier recovered the couple’s vehicle from Iganga after it was violently robbed from them.
The new group comprised of ten notorious robbers who attack their victims on the high ways, rob property as well as motor vehicles.
“There is a long list of vehicles and goods robbed across the country. Information at hand is that they have previously terrorized districts of Hoima, Kazo Butambala, Ntungamo, Kyenjojo and Kiboga. This particular operation kick started immediately after Geoffrey Lutaaya and his wife were robbed of their vehicle” Said Kayima.
He commended police officers for the job well done and asked the community to remain extra vigilant and report such incidents whenever they take happen.
