A panel of three justices, Ezekiel Muhanguzi, Jane Kiggundu and Percy Tuhaise are today expected to start hearing a case in which 14 people are accused of plotting a wave of attacks against Muslim clerics, at the International Crimes Division of the High Court.
Originally, the case had 31 suspects but the state discontinued charges against 17 of the suspects. 16 of them however face similar but separate charges before the Nakawa Court.
The development comes after Justice Duncan Gaswaga set the hearing date last month upon conclusion after of the pre-trial hearing and confirmed the charges of terrorism, murder and attempted murder against the accused persons.
The accused persons include the leader of the Tabligh sect, Sheikh Yunus Kamoga, Sheikh Siraj Kawooya, Sekayanja Abdulsalaam alias Kassim Mulumba, Sematimba Abdulhamid Mubiru, Jingo Rashid, Sekitto Twaha, Kakande Yusuf alias Abdallah and Sheikh Murta Mudde Bukenya.
Others are Hakim Kinene Muswaswa, Amir Kinene, Sheikh Kalungi Fahad, Hamuza Kasirye, Musa Issa Mubiru and Iga George William alias Hamuza.
Prosecution claims that Sheikh Yunus Kamoga, the leader of the Tabligh sect and the others, directed systematic attacks against Shia and Tabligh Muslims, in a wave of attacks in which several clerics were killed.
Those killed include Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga, who was gunned down along Entebbe Road, Sheikh Abdulkdir Muwaya who was killed in Mayuge District and Sheikh Hassan Kirya who was shot and killed in Bweyogerere, Wakiso District.
All the suspects deny the allegations.
