A dark cloud hovered over Kalisizo trading centre in Rakai district after unidentified robbers shot indiscriminately at resident traders killing a trader and injuring three others.
The incident occurred at around 9pm last night. According to residents, Charles Ssenkali died when he and three others tried to flee from the robbers.
Two of the injured have been identified as Nathan Bukenya and Mulindwa Byansi.
Bukenya told reporters on his bed at Kalisizo Hospital where he is agonizing that he saw the thugs driving around town at around 8pm but didn't realize they were on a mission.
A few minutes later, Bukenya narrates that he heard gunshots from all corners before the robbers started ordering traders to surrender all their money, but when he tried to flee, was shot in the leg and he fell down.
A resident of Kalisizo town, who identified herself as Rosemary Namulindwa, says although the police station is just a few minutes away, police didn't respond to the robbery. According to her story, the robbers executed their mission for close to 30 minutes without any police response.
It later took the intervention of Police officers from Masaka Central Police Station, which is about 20 kilometres away to respond to the robbery.
The Greater Masaka Region Police Commander Maxwell Ogwal, who rushed to Kalisizo today morning, says they are hunting for the thugs, and he has deployed patrols in Kalisizo and Kyotera town councils to prevent more robberies.
