One Police Flying Squad officer wanted for shooting dead a three-year-old child and two other people in Mityana district, has been apprehended.
The suspect is Sergeant Geoffrey Egwang, one of the three officers wanted over the shooting.
According to Emmanuel Mafundi, the Mityana District Police Commander, they are holding Egwang as the search for his colleagues continues. Egwang has already confessed to shooting, saying they opened fire after coming under a mob attack.
The suspects, according to Mafundi face charges of murder and attempted murder since they acted on their own. Trouble for Egwang and two others started when they raided Buluma Village in Butayunja Sub County on Monday morning to intervene in community wrangles.
It is alleged that the officers rushed to the village on the invitation of a one Kulumba who was being accused by other residents for practicing witchcraft.
On arrival on the village, the officers attempted to make arrests and found resistance from the residents prompting them to open fire, which claimed the life 3-year-old- Viola and injured her mother Dina Nabakooza and Ivan Kito.
Nabakooza and Kato were rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital where they are being treated for the gunshot wounds. The Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura has dispatched a team of officers to meet the families of the gunshot victims.
