A murder suspect has committed suicide in Nyarushanje Police Station in Rukungiri district, leaving authorities in panic.

Police identified the deceased as 50-yaear-old Johnson Muhekyi, a resident of Rutoma B cell in Ibanda Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-County.

An officer, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, says Muhekyi was found hanging in the Police cells on Tuesday evening. According to the officer, Muhekyi had vowed not to answer for a crime he didn't commit.

He was arrested and caged on March 25th in connection to the death of his two-month- old grandchild. His arrest came after the minor's body was recovered from a water tank over the weekend.

The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate says Muhekyi used his trousers to commit suicide, adding that they are investigating circumstances surrounding the incident.

Muramye Ntangaare, a resident of Rutoma B cell says the deceased has been feuding with his family members over land. This is not the first time a suspect is found dead in police cells in Rukungiri District.
