The Police in Ibanda, together with their Mbarara and Bushenyi counterparts have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which a prominent Bushenyi businessman was kidnapped and killed by unknown people.
John Rwamutwe alias Hedex of Hedex hardware was kidnapped on Tuesday night at a hotel in Bushenyi town where he had gone to have a drink with his nephew (name withheld).
According to a family member who spoke to this site on anonymity, Rwamutwe was part of a delegation that attended the late city lawyer Mauda’s burial in Kantunda.
Upon return, the deceased went to have a drink with the nephew at a certain hotel, a few meters from their home, and when time to go home came, as they entered his car, another person jumped into the passenger seat.
“Nephew saw them argue. After waiting for over 30 minutes, he decided to walk home and left the two men arguing inside the car” the source told Howwe.
The source adds that since the deceased’s phones had no battery, the nephew decided to leave his with the uncle. The wife later came home from Kampala where she had gone shopping.
“She reached home, slept and woke up at 4am, only to find her husband not yet home. She checked her phone and found14 missed calls from nephew’s number, which had been taken by the husband. She called back and kidnappers asked her to send UGX500,000 or they would kill him. They even put him on phone, and she spoke to him. He asked her to pay the money which she did. They promised to drop him at Bushenyi police station, but never came through with the promise” the family member narrates.
When the wife waited and there was no sign of the kidnappers, she decided to tell the police who followed the matter up immediately. On Wednesday, it was revealed that his car had passed Nyamushekyera prison at a very low speed in the wee hours, and it was evident that someone was being tortured inside the same car.
Police then started tracking the phone number she had sent money to, and it was in isingiro, while the nephew’s number was roaming along Bushenyi to Mbarara.
The family decided to join the search, sent whatsapp messages with the deceased’s picture, until this morning when his body was discovered locked in a metallic case, in his car, a Hilux Surf Reg. No. UAQ 567R.
The car was found parked in Kyarutanga, Ibanda. Also, an amount of 5 million shillings was found in the car.
“We found too much blood in the car and no sign of the body, but a metallic case could be seen inside. We were scared and called the police. The police opened the case and we found his body cut to fit in” a one Rev. Fr. Syrian who was with family in the search told us.
Rwamutwe is a brother to Scholar Ndyagambaki former head teacher Kitante Primary school, and an in-law to Dr. HON. Richard Nduhura, Uganda's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
