Pine car bond proprietor, Muhammad Ssebuwufu has filed a notice of appeal challenging his 40-year sentence handed to him for the murder of businesswoman Betty Donah Katusabe.
On Monday, Ssebuwufu and six others; Godfrey Kayiza, Phillip Mirambe, Paul Tasingika, Yoweri Kitayimba, Shaban Otuddu and Damaseni Ssentongo were each sentenced by High Court Judge Flavia Anglin Ssenoga.
The men were found guilty of all the three charges of murder, kidnapping with intentions to kill and aggravated robbery. They were also ordered to pay 100 million shillings to the family of the deceased.
But on Tuesday, their lawyer Evans Ochieng filed a notice of appeal in the Court of Appeal arguing that they intend to challenge the sentence, conviction and orders made in the judgment of Lady Justice Ssenoga.
According to Ochien, they have also written to the High Court Registrar requesting for a copy of the judgment to enable them formulate the grounds of their appeal. He argues that the evidence adduced by 26 prosecution witnesses was insufficient to secure a conviction against them.
Court, on Monday, heard that the convicts on October, 21st 2015 kidnapped Katusabe from her home in Bwebajja along Entebbe road, drove her to Pine car Bond along Lumumba Avenue in Kampala and tortured her to death after failing to pay a debt of 9 million shillings.
The convicts also robbed Katusabe of her sim cards and the mobile phone worth 300,000 shillings.
