Police under the Flying Squad unit have arrested a man impersonating a Makerere University Professor to steal cars from sellers and hires.

The suspect Jude Mugisha, is accused of stealing over 13 cars from his victims while posing as a decent professor with money.

Mugisha has since admitted to stealing cars using the same methods at car bonds, from people selling their cars and those hiring.

In a statement recorded by police, Mugisha says he usually dressed in suits, carried fake business cards, and in some instances deposited money to earn trust from his victims.

“If I found a person having expensive cars, I would begin by hiring a Raum or Wish," Mugisha narrated before Flying Squad’s interrogation team.

"I would make sure I return it and the next day, I hire another one which is a bit expensive and in the process, I would be trusted. On the third time, I would choose the one I targeted to sell to my waiting client,” he stated

According to the Flying Squad Commandant Assistant Commissioner of Police –ACP Andrew Kaggwa, he assigned a team to hunt down the "professor" after receiving close to 20 complaints of car theft.

He says the suspect would accept any amount of money asked by the car owners and transact business without showing an identity card. He would give a deposit of a million shillings or even more, depending on its sale value.

The suspect was arrested in Bunamwaya, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso district while trying to sell off a car he had stolen from one Chrysostom Kangave, a resident of Lubaga, Kampala.

He landed on Flying Squad’s covert operatives as he searched for the prospective buyer.

Kangave’s Toyota Hilux UAX 393D was stolen early this month by a person who disguised as a buyer.

“He came and asked to test drive but he disappeared. I got scared when the person failed to return in the few minutes he had promised. I rushed to Nateete police station and I opened a case. The person who took it was not a stranger because he had earlier befriended me,” Kangave said.
