Police in Kaliro have established that the motorcycle that exploded at a petrol station had its engine on.
Locals along Walya road in Kaliro town council were left in shock after a motorcycle registration number UDR 615L burst into flames at the Hared fuel pump station on Tuesday afternoon.
The rider and passenger both escaped with no injuries as they had already jumped off by the time it produced the big blast.
The Busoga North police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha, says that available information shows that the motorcyclist didn't switch off his engine during the refilling process, which might have led to the fire incident.
He adds that the fire was quickly contained and the wreckage towed to Kaliro central police station's parking yard.
Kasadha says it took the effort of locals, pump attendants, and officers from the Police Fire and Rescue Services Department to put out the fire to stop it from spreading to sensitive areas of the pump station.
Samaddu Ngobi, the motorcycle rider, says he was equally shocked to see the bike burst into huge flames.
"I cannot explain what exactly happened because I am still recovering from the shock. But all I remember is the big blast and random flames, which ensued from the motorcycle during the fuel refilling process prompting me to run off to one of the nearby shops," he said.
