Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development Hon. Mutuuzo Peace says government is looking to redevelop the national Theatre and not destroy it as has been the talk around town.

Addressing the press at Uganda media center this afternoon, Mutuuzo said a number of meetings have been held and they are following the PPDA act.

She insists there is no need for alarm that government is trying to sell the facility.

“We are developing this facility and there is no reason for alarm that government is trying to sale this facility. I want to assure you that government is in charge and there are no wrangles” she said.

Mutuuzo added; “"Our intention is to reorganize the National Theatre. There are plans on how this building will be managed.”

Hon. Mutuuzo explains that they are already at the level of designing and awaiting to award the tender.

There has been talk that government wants to demolish the National theatre in favor of building an industrial park.

However, the minister says the places around it, is where they are going to build the new development project but also maintain the greenery.

Mutuuzo says the National Theatre will undergo a rehabilitation process prior to Jama fest 2017. She explains that all performances during the fest will be held at the National Theatre.

According to Mutuuzo, the amount of money needed for redevelopment is not specific now, because the developer has to give all the costs and bear them.

“The contract has not been awarded we are having talks with the different partners that are taking part in the bidding” she added.
