The body of beloved comedian Nicholas Mpirwe, known to many as Messe, is finally returning to Uganda. Messe passed away in Arizona on December 12th of last year, reportedly due to heart failure, while pursuing opportunities in the United States.
For over a month, his family and friends have been working tirelessly to raise the funds needed to bring him home. Now, it's been confirmed that his body will arrive in Kampala this Thursday, January 16th.
A statement released by Kapalanga, a friend also residing in the US, confirmed the news:
"We are here to let you know that our brother’s body Nicholas Mpiirwe, well known as Messe Bontwe, has today Jan 14th 2025 left the United States of America. Nicholas’s body will arrive in Uganda on 16th January 2025, and he will be handed over to the Executive Funeral Services and the family."
A series of tributes and ceremonies will be held to honor Messe's memory. On Saturday, January 18th, his body will be taken to the National Theatre, a place deeply connected to his artistic life, where fellow artists and members of the public can pay their respects. From there, on Sunday, January 19th, he will be taken to his ancestral home in Rwampara district for burial on Monday, January 20th, at 2:00 PM.
Messe was a key figure in Ugandan comedy, notably as one of the founding members of the popular Amarula Family, alongside comedians Amooti and the late Pande Bitama. He also had a career in radio, working with Super FM and Dembe FM before moving to the United States. His loss is deeply felt by many.
