After a harrowing ordeal in South Africa, singer Kemi Sera is finally back home. Her desperate situation came to light when she posted a heartfelt video online, pleading for help from her fellow Ugandans.
Kemi had travelled to South Africa with hopes of a better life, promised by a romantic partner. Sadly, this turned into a nightmare when he betrayed her, taking all her documents and leaving her stranded, penniless, and unable to return home.
In a touching turn of events, fellow singer Mary Bata, despite past disagreements with Kemi, stepped in to help. Mary provided crucial support, helping Kemi obtain asylum and offering financial assistance. Even after Kemi’s attempts to secure travel documents were tragically disrupted by a shooting and robbery, Mary didn't give up.
Kemi, reaching a breaking point, bravely shared her story in a tearful video that went viral. Kneeling and apologizing, she begged for help to return to Uganda. The video resonated deeply, catching the attention of UNMF president Eddy Kenzo, who pledged to ensure her safe return.
Yesterday evening, Kemi finally arrived back in Uganda, thanks to Mary's unwavering support. The two women spoke to the media, sharing their experiences. A visibly shaken Kemi described the appalling conditions she had endured and confessed to regrets about her music career. "I have been living in very poor conditions...and I am yet to be fine," she said. "I do have some regrets about leaving the music industry.”
While rumors of past tensions between the two singers swirled, Mary chose to focus on the present. She urged the public to rally around Kemi during this difficult time. “I ask the public to help Kemi,” Mary pleaded. “There is no use in dwelling on the past. Let us focus on helping her this year. Whoever has financial aid can help her because she currently has nothing to her name.”
