Media critic Frank Gashumba has a deep interest in Ugandan music and has long supported the industry, particularly artists, when they organize concerts.
However, Gashumba says the Ugandan music industry is declining and requires immediate attention for quick recovery. He believes today's artists are no longer producing good music but rather substandard content.
"Good music was once here, but that is no longer the case. The industry is in decline—we hardly hear meaningful music from Ugandan artists anymore. Many are releasing trash songs, claiming that’s what the fans demand," he explained.
Gashumba’s list of favorite artists includes Irene Namubiru, Juliana Kanyomozi, King Saha, Jose Chameleone, Winnie Nwagi, and the late Philly Bongole Lutaaya, whom he praises for his legendary music and contribution to the industry.
Despite his concerns, Gashumba believes the music industry should continue receiving government funding, just as many other sectors do.
