Ugandan cinema has pulled some strides in 2013.
It was the year when 3D cinema found its way to Kampala; we were all excited about watching movies with shades on, thanks to Cinema Magic at Metroplex mall, Naalya. Not to be left behind, Cineplex, the cinema giants in Uganda, also introduced a 3D cinema and their first movie was Thor.
Before we could completely get used to the technology, the cinema world has been introduced to yet another dimension that is going to send our movie theatre leaders back to the drawing boards. A 5D cinema opened in Kampala last week at Ham plaza, opposite Makerere University main gate.
The cinema now caters for both 3D and 5D movie lovers. Cinemax 5D offers movie aficionados and thrill seekers the first and only 5D theatre experience in Uganda.
The cozy six-seater intimate theatre (for the 5D experience) addresses all the senses with full length movies, including action, classic and thriller genres. Each show features one movie and is appropriate for all ages.
The 5D cinema combines 3D, physical and environmental effects for an ultimate theatre experience. The seats at the theatre are ‘3 Degree of Freedom’, which allows up and down, front and back, left and right movement in sync with the onscreen activity.
The auditorium features snow and fog machines, vibrating seats, “ticklers” near your legs, misters on the safety bar in front of you, strobe lights and more. For example, when you head through a wintry environment on screen, the snow machines kick on and a few (somewhat soapy) snowflakes float through the air.
The experience also includes a wide variety of environmental effects including smoke, fog, bubbles, thunder, storm, wind, rain, all depending on the film’s storyline.

As for what you will be watching, you won’t be seeing many mainstream Hollywood movies here, at least not anytime soon. Instead, audiences are currently treated to a series of Percy Jackson movies. And hey, given the fact that Uganda’s snow has taken leave since forever, the 5D Cinemax might be your best chance to see some snow!
