Musician Eddy Kenzo has addressed the fears of media owners following the government's approval of a copyright management system.

While addressing the press, Kenzo clarified that the fees to be paid by media houses are going to be affordable, and they will be required to pay them annually.

He says the fees will not be exploitative, and only selfish media owners should be afraid of them.

"They will tell you to pay UGX 200,000 for music; unless you’re just selfish, it's going to be affordable, and the license will run for a full year," he explained.

Kenzo says music distributors will be handling the allocation of royalties to ensure fairness. He adds that part of the money will go to the government and the distributing company.

He also says that the government is working to introduce a policy that calls for playing Ugandan music for the largest percentage alongside international works.

The copyright management system was approved by the president over the weekend. It will register artists and their works, track music usage in bars and on media, specifically TVs and radios, and ensure that artists get paid for plays and end music piracy.
