A countrywide vaccination of dogs and cats to end rabies has today been launched, says State Minister for Animal Industry, Hon. Bright Rwamirama.

According to the minister, a task force that comprises of medical doctors and veterinarians has been put together as Uganda prepares to join the rest of the world to celebrate the World Veterinary day on 30th of this month.

The day will be celebrated under an international Theme; “Continuing Education with a One Health focus.”

Addressing the media in Kampala this morning, Maj Rwamirama said the event was created in 2000, but Uganda has been celebrating it for 10 years now.

According to the minister, the purpose of this year's celebrations is to create the awareness of veterinarians as the country requires a very good performance of veterinarians to not only control diseases but good practices.

He explains that Zonotic diseases are becoming a serious health problem and are caused by bacteria shared (animal and man) including brucellosis.

Maj. Rwamirama gave an example of the common condition of parasites in Uganda, manifested in Busoga region where the jigger disease attacks warm blooded animals and doubles as a zonotic disease.
