The Uganda police force has cautioned church leaders across the country to subject Christians who are planning to walk to Namugongo to a medical screening to eliminate any sick persons.
This was communicated by Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson at Naguru in Kampala today. He explains that last year, a person died, while others were admitted due to fatigue as they trekked to Namugongo from Lira.
Each year, pilgrims walk from all parts of the country, and outside countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, D.R Congo and other African countries to celebrate the Uganda Martyrs day at Namugongo Catholic and protestant shrines.
“The danger with those walking on foot is that some are weak with associated health problems and related weaknesses which makes them vulnerable over long distance walking,” said Enanga.
He added; “The police would like to caution church leaders with large group affairs organized by their churches, to conduct health screening checks to guard against such scenarios. This is because the personal safety of all pilgrims, visitors, and tourists is our number one priority. And although security would be beefed up, the public is advised to be aware of their surroundings to avoid falling victim to fraudsters and pickpockets.
