President Yoweri Museveni has resumed his call against judges giving bail to murderers.
The president has in the past been against this claiming this constitution says such people may not be allowed the luxury of bail.
“I also ask the Judiciary to act responsibly. For example why give bail to a murder suspect? Constitution says you 'may' not 'must' give bail.”
The president was presiding over closure of the 13th East African Magistrates & Judges Association Conference on Thursday at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
He also advised that judicial systems must help transform societies.
“Judicial systems must be linked to these five words lest they become irrelevant; justice, liberation, recovery, development & transformation.”
He warned judicial officers against making what he described as “irresponsible decisions” that are affecting people in the country.
The East African Magistrates & Judges Association Conference was opened on Tuesday this week by Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and ended last evening.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Rugunda called upon Judiciaries to employ revolutionary methods to address corruption from its roots. "A judiciary may be comprised of first class ICT systems, modern buildings and adequate stationery but if it's human resource is apathetic, lazy and corrupt, transformation will be impossible to achieve.”
The three-day Conference was running under the theme: "Transformation of Judiciaries in East Africa for Improved Service Delivery." And attracted delegates from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda,South Sudan, Lesotho, Commonwealth Secretariat, Zanzibar, and the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association (CMJA).
