Police in Mbarara have in custody four people who were found in possession counterfeit currency amounting to 230 million Shillings.
Taban Chiriga, the officer in charge of the criminal investigations at Mbarara Police Station identified the suspects as Paul Mugabe (28), Abdallah Tweyongere (32), Allan Abangira (25), and another only identified as Jabila (43).
The four were picked from Nyamityobora lower cell in Kakoba division, Mbarara municipality after receiving a report from one of the locals who had fallen victim to their racket.
They were found in possession of counterfeit Uganda Shilling noted, Rwanda Francs and US Dollars. Police also recovered chemicals which the group was using to printing the counterfeits.
Taban says the group has been using strategic positions at Katuna border in Kabale, Mirama hills in Ntungamo and Butogota and Ishasha border posts to dupe persons seeking Forex services.
Chiriga urges travelers to be on the lookout for such scams and always use recognized Forex bureaus.
Justus Kamugasha, a shop keeper in Mbarara town told our reporter that he had fallen a victim of the group's tricks. He says that they bought goods worth two million Shillings from his shop using counterfeits late last month.
