The electoral commission has this morning released the road map ahead of the Kamuli Municipality MP by-election.

The seat fell vacant when the Court of Appeal nullified the election of former MP Hon. Rehema Watongola over lack of requisite academic papers.

Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the electoral commission chairman told the press this morning that as required by law, the statutory deadline for conducting a Parliamentary by-election is sixty days after notification from Clerk to Parliament on the occurrence of the vacancy.

“The Commission received the notice on 17th February 2017 and therefore, the statutory deadline for holding the by-election is 17th April 2017” Byabakama said.

The commission will carry out nominations on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th March 2017, at the office of the returning officer in Kamuli municipality.

The nomination exercise will be followed by a period of six days, from Thursday 23rd to Tuesday 28th March 2017, during which members of the general public will have access to the candidates’ nomination papers, and will be able to lodge complaints if any, on suitability of the candidates to contest in the by-election.

“Campaign meetings shall be held for a period of 15 days, from Monday 27th March until Monday 10th April 2017. The campaign meetings or public rallies shall be conducted only within the stipulated time, from 7am until 6pm on each of the campaign days” the EC chairman said.

Justice Byabakama urged all candidates to observe law and order during the exercise and to conduct their campaign meetings in accordance with the harmonized programme. "Hate “language will not be tolerated at all.”

Polling shall take place on Wednesday 12th April 2017 at all polling stations in Kamuli Municipality and shall start at 7am and close at 4pm.

Meanwhile, the commission has today 22nd February 2017 started the exercise of updating the National Voter’s Register at update stations within each parish in Aruu North constituency.
