At least fifteen houses and several crop gardens have been devastated by a heavy downpour in several villages of Muko Sub County in Rubanda District leaving several residents in tears.
The heavy rains that lasted for at least two hours started at around 01:00am and affected the villages of; Habutoboore, Rukoro I, Rukoro II Market area, Kagorogoro, Mukibungo, Igabiro, Rushekye, Karengyere, Ikamiro and Rugarambiro. A URN reporter visited the area and found locals using basins to carry water and mud from the houses.
Also, the road branching off from Kabale-Kisoro highway to Muko sub county headquarters, Muko Health centre II and Muko police station was cut off by floods.
According to the Muko Sub County Chief Jared Muhwezi, the rains caused floods that washed away several gardens of crops as well as animals. Muhwezi says the floods washed away fifteen houses, twenty toilets, thirteen hectares of Irish potato gardens and several gardens of cabbages.
Also swept away are four drums of porridge, 63 bags of Irish Potato, twenty-six hens, seven pigs, four head of cattle and nine bags of maize flour among others.
Muhwezi says that all the poultry and animals that were swept away by flood water are still missing.
James Muhwezi Katundu, a resident of Muko Market area, says that all his Irish Potato and cabbage gardens were devastated. Muhwezi says that unless leaders beg for relief aid from the Government, people will soon face famine.
Fanty Tayembwa, a businessman and the owner of Kizimekese Bar at Rukoro 1 cell, says that all his music system and crates of beer were washed away.
Silva Niringiyimana, the Health Inspector for Muko Sub County, expresses worry about an outbreak of diseases like dysentery and cholera since most of the toilets were destroyed adding that locals are likely to start using the nearby bushes to ease themselves.
Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema, the Rubanda District Chairperson, says that the district is in the the damage so as to forward the report to the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness.
