Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu has warned that the Ivory tower will recall the degrees of all students found guilty of having benefited from the marks alteration.

In February, Uganda’s oldst University closed the online marks system and suspended the issuance of academic transcripts after it emerged that some staff in the academic registrar's office were tampering with student's marks.

The Makerere University Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof.  Barnabas Nawangwe would then write to the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura to intervene and investigate the matter.

The officers from Crime Intelligence and Investigations Department (CIID) later picked up Christopher Ntwatwa and Mike Barongo, both IT specialists attached to the academic registrar's office in connection to the complaints of marks alteration, before suspending, Joyce Namusoke an Assistant Registrar in the School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical Science over the same complaints.

Now, Prof. Ddumba, the Makerere University Vice Chancellor, says the complaints of marks alteration are not good for the university, and that investigations into the matter are ongoing. He also dismissed claims that they had issued a circular announcing the commencement of the issuance of academic transcripts.

On April 1, 2017, a circular purportedly issued by the Academic Registrar, Alfred Namoah Masikye made rounds on social media notifying stakeholders that the university was ready to issue academic transcripts effective 2nd April.

However, this morning, Masikye issued a statement disowning the notice. "This is to inform the general public that the above communication is FALSE and not an official position of the University," Masikye said.

Adding that verification of students' results was on-going and should be completed before transcripts can be issued.
