The parliamentary Appointments Committee will today Friday vet Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo as the new Deputy Chief Justice.
President Yoweri Museveni recently appointed Owiny-Dollo to replace retiring Justice Stephen Kavuma, who is set to leave office before the end of this month, after clocking the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.
According to sources at Parliament, the Clerk to Parliament, Jane Kibirige, recently wrote to Owiny-Dollo and the two justices set to be elevated to the Supreme Court - Richard Buteera and Paul Mugamba - informing them to appear for vetting.
After more than two decades of private legal practice, Owiny-Dollo, 61, joined the bench in 2008 as a High Court judge, after quitting elective politics following his loss to Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo in a parliamentary race for Agago County.
He has served as resident judge in Fort Portal, the International Crimes Division of the High Court and the High Court Execution and Bailiffs Division.
Owiny-Dollo famously handled the case against the masterminds of the 2002 terrorist bombings that targeted revelers watching the World Cup final at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds and Kabalagala, a city suburb.
