Tens of thousands of Ugandans have converged at Bushenyi Municipal grounds to commemorate the country’s 55th Independence Day. On this occasions, Ugandans remember its citizens that shed their blood to force colonialists to hand the country its self-rule.
President Yoweri Museveni, the chief guest arrived mid-morning, and inspected the guard of honor.
The theme for this year’s independence is, “Uganda’s freedom must be anchored in the spirit of hard work, resilience and commitment”.
In attendance is His Highness Aga Khan the president’s special guest who will receive a special honor because of the immense economic contributions he has made to the country and the whole world.
Also in attendance is the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the Prime minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, ministers, MPs, Chief of Defence forces Gen. David Muhoozi, IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura, and members of Bushenyi Local government.
Uganda received its independence from her colonial masters the British, in 1962.
Britain, a nation renowned in arts and arms, had extended its dominion over considerable parts of every quarter of the globe. However, its grip on most colonies of the world came crumbling after the Second World War (1939-45) that not only weakened them economically but also empowered most African elites to vigorously and viciously demand for self-rule and the rest is history.
“Our freedom reminds us of the sacrifice of our freedom fighters and their devotion to the cause of freedom through struggle and sacrifice. On this occasion, we remember those people who sacrificed most of their youthful years to force our colonial masters to give us self-rule” says Esther Mbayo, the minister for presidency.
However, while celebrations are going down in Bushenyi, some Ugandans think there’s nothing to celebrate on such a day.
Kassim told Howwe.biz this morning that the president has turned Independence Day into a family and party event where they all meet to enjoy at the expense of the rest of Ugandans.
“I am not celebrating because these people take independence as their thing, celebrating dictatorship and all the bad things. Other people are crying, for them, they are celebrating” said an angry Kassim.
